A recent survey from the Center for American Progress demonstrates the healthcare-specific experiences and, consequently, avoidance behaviors of many LGBTQ+ Americans:

  • 3 in 10 LGBTQ+ Americans and more than half of transgender Americans had difficulty accessing medical care due to costs
  • 15% of LGBTQ+ Americans and nearly 30% of transgender individuals postponed or avoided treatment due to discrimination
  • 1 in 3 transgender individuals had to teach their doctors about healthcare issues to get the proper care

What is Gender Reassignment?

Although it goes by different names (Gender Affirmation, Gender Confirmation, Sex Reassignment Surgery, and Gender Dysphoria), Gender Reassignment refers to the medical procedures and interventions that help people transition from their assigned gender at birth to their experienced or expressed gender.

It can include behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, hormone therapy, and surgery for gender transformation.

Research shows approximately 9,000 transgender surgeries are performed each year in the US, and just under 11% of medical encounters of transsexualism result in Gender Affirming surgery, with both numbers steadily increasing each year.

Gender Reassignment Coverage for Taboola Employees in the US

Through our policy with UHC Medical, anyone who meets the requirements will be covered. When the criteria are met, the procedures to treat Gender Dysphoria are considered medically necessary and are therefore covered. These include:

  • Bilateral mastectomy or breast reduction
  • Clitoroplasty, labiaplasty, and vaginoplasty
  • Hysterectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy, vaginectomy, and vulvectomy
  • Metoidioplasty, phalloplasty, and scrotoplasty
  • Orchiectomy and penectomy
  • Penile and testicular prosthesis
  • Urethroplasty
